The GU Program reorganized its seminar series to more fully involve the program members, research colleagues from other CCSG programs, research colleagues in the larger RPCI community, young colleagues who are potential members, post-doctoral and pre-doctoral students, and the research staff. The weekly “Tuesday Morning Seminar” provides an informal environment for translational scientists and clinician-scientists to present and discuss laboratory findings and outline research plans. Presenters range from students to CCSG members, and attendance has averaged 32. The formal monthly seminar series, "2nd Tuesday Seminar," occurs on the second Tuesday of each month. This year’s speakers included:

  • Dr. Xue Ru Wu, M.D., Professor; Vice Chair of Research, Departments of Urology (Urology) and Pathology
  • Dr. Karen Knudsen, Ph.D., Professor, Departments of Cancer Biology (primary), Urology, and Radiation Oncology, Thomas Jefferson University
  • Akash Patnaik, M.D., Ph.D., Instructor in Medicine, Harvard Medical School, Attending Physician, Division of Hematology/Oncology, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center
  • Rakesh V. Khanna, M.D., F.R.C.S.(C), Clinical Fellow, Center for Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery, Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute

The GU Disease Site Research Group (GU-DSRG) meets monthly. The meeting features a speaker from another CCSG program or Core to encourage inter-programmatic research activities. The alternate meetings are devoted to optimization of translational investigation, enrollment of patients on external peer-reviewed and investigator-initiated trials, and research sample utilization. Each of these meeting uses a standard format consisting of 1) Clinical Protocol Enrollment and Prioritization; 2) New Publications; 3) New Grants; 4) Translational Research Projects; and 5) Tissue Inventory and Utilization. Average attendance has been 16. The format adopted by the GU-DSRG is being replicated throughout Roswell Park.

Throughout the week, there are several required and optional conferences that contribute to Fellow education.
