The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine plays a central and critical role in supporting the Institute’s mission of excellence in patient care, translational research and medical education.
The Department consists of six divisions including:
- Anatomic Pathology
- Laboratory Medicine
- Flow Cytometry
- Molecular Diagnostics
- Pathology Resource Network
The Department includes over 25 MD, PhD or MD/PhD faculty and 210 technical and support personnel.
Two CCSG shared resources are housed in the Department which include Flow Cytometry and the Pathology Resource Network. The Pathology Resource Network, is engaged in translational research support with an active tissue procurement program, Tissue Microarray fabrication, FISH/CISH, immunohistochemistry, digital image analysis, nucleic acid extraction lab, and laser capture microdissection.
An ACGME accreditated selective fellowship in Oncologic Surgical Pathology is offered under the direction of Dr. Charles LeVea. Pathology residents from the State University of New York at Buffalo program rotate through the Department as part of their residency training. Pathology fellows have been the recipients of the Institute’s Best Scientific and Clinical Research Papers awarded among all the Institute fellows for several of the past three years. The Department’s CLIA certified labs are accreditated by NYS-DOH, JCAHO, AABB, FDA, and ASHI.
