Understanding Your Roswell Park Bills

Currently, cancer care at Roswell Park is billed in two separate bills. One bill is for Hospital services and one is for Physician services. However, changes to combine and simplify your bill are coming this September! See below to learn more.

Hospital bill

This bill, from Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, reflects charges for hospital services and may include outpatient clinic services, medical tests, room fees, supplies, equipment, and services from technicians, nurses or other staff.

Bills also can be paid by check or credit card via U.S. mail or at the cashier’s window in the lobby of the hospital. If you would like to make a credit card payment by phone, please call the Patient Accounts Department at 716-845-8220.

Physician bill

This bill, from RPCI Clinical Practice Plan, reflects charges for your physicians’ time and expertise like an exam or consultation.

Bills also can be paid by check or credit card via U.S. mail or at the cashier’s window in the hospital. To make a credit card payment by phone, please call 1-877-247-2143.

Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center and Roswell Park Care Network were recently notified of a cybersecurity issue involving a vendor, UnitedHealth Group’s Change Healthcare — a healthcare technology company that provides revenue and payment tools. While efforts continue at a national level to address this incident, we are contacting you to make you aware of payment issues affecting some services provided at Roswell Park.

RPCI Clinical Practice Plan billing: If you received a Roswell Park bill before Feb. 21, 2024, payable to “RPCI Clinical Practice Plan" (see lower portion of bill) and have not yet paid, the system is out of service until further notice and we are unable to process your payment at this time. There will be no penalty or referral to a collection agency for late payments under this plan. Bills for ongoing appointments and clinic visits will not be issued for the short term. Patients will be instructed accordingly on how to make payments for these services once systems are operational again.

IMPORTANT: Outside of billing for those services, all other hospital service billings related to Roswell Park remain unaffected, and payment of all other hospital bills can continue as normal.

New billing statements coming soon!

A simpler and easier way to read and pay your Roswell Park bill (including both hospital and physician fees) will begin in September 2024. Here’s what to expect:

  • A single billing statement. All charges starting September 2024 will be combined on one easy-to-read statement, with hospital and providers fees listed separately.
  • Online bill payment portal. Pay all bills for charges incurred starting September 2024 on one online payment website.
  • Multiple ways to pay. In addition to paying online, by check or by credit card, use our new automated phone payment system or speak to a representative.
  • Customer service center. Reach a representative via phone or email who can help you with your account.

Please keep in mind that because these changes go in effect starting September 1, 2024, you will still receive and pay bills in the old format for any charges incurred prior to September 1. In other words, you may receive bills in both the old and new format for some time after we turn the system on in September.

These billing improvements are part of a larger project to upgrade our technology systems at Roswell Park. Our teams have been preparing for months and have received proper training, but as with any major technology upgrade, there may be some unexpected challenges. We appreciate your patience as Roswell Park staff adjust to using the new system in September.

Your actual costs will be based on your specific needs and experience with us. We encourage you to call our Financial Counselors for assistance in further refining your estimate.
  • Any change to your care throughout your course of treatment will likely change the estimated cost.
  • Roswell Park offers financial need-based copay assistance programs. Please call us at 716-845-4782 if you need assistance with meeting your copayment obligations.

Affordable Care Act hospital mandates

United States hospitals are required to give public access to the list of hospital charges for items and services they provide. In compliance with this mandate, we have provided a link below to download the listing. Unfortunately, this does not accurately reflect what our patients pay because it does not take into account a patient’s health insurance arrangements, any financial aid, and state and federal reimbursable care support. If you have questions regarding your bill or would like to better understand cancer care costs for your treatment, please call Roswell Park’s financial counselors at 716-845-4782.

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act

During the pandemic the United States government has implanted the CARES Act. Section 3202 (b2) of the CARES act requires all providers to list the cash price for a COVID-19 Diagnostic test. In compliance with this mandate, please be advised the cash price for a COVID-19 Diagnostic test is $98.

Regardless if a patient has insurance coverage or is uninsured, this cash amount does not reflect what a patient will be required to pay for a COVID-19 test. New York state insurance companies are required to pay for testing and are not permitted to apply patient cost sharing. Financial assistance may be provided to patients in the unlikely event a patient incurs a bill for COVID-19 testing. If you have any questions regarding your financial liability for this test, please call Roswell Park’s  Financial Counselors at 716-845-4782.

Non-Roswell Park providers

As a Roswell Park patient, you may receive treatment or services from providers that have privileges at Roswell Park, but are not Roswell Park staff. This means you could potentially receive an additional bill if the provider is not participating with your health plan. To check your coverage for a non-Roswell Park provider, please review the list and contact their office.

Frequently asked questions about hospital charges

If you are insured, the fees that the hospital charges are unlikely to affect the amount that you are required to pay. The amount you have to pay after insurance payment is largely dictated by copayment and coinsurance, which is set by your insurer.

Roswell Park is committed to making healthcare more affordable for our patients and offers discounts for all uninsured patients:

  • If you are uninsured and a New York State resident with financial hardship, Roswell Park offers a Charity Care Program. The level of your discount is dependent on your income, asset level and household size. Information on our Charity Care Program can be found here.
  • If you are not a New York State resident or you are uninsured and do not have a financial hardship, significant discounts off charges are still available to you.
Similar to the answer in the first question, the hospital’s charges are unlikely to impact the amount that you will pay. Often high deductible and copayment plans have a maximum liability per year for the patient. Please check with your health insurer to see if you have an out-of-pocket maximum on your insurance plan. If you do, when receiving care for a chronic illness, you are likely to meet that maximum regardless of charges or where you receive care.
Roswell Park has copay assistance for New York State residents only. The level of your discount is dependent on your income, asset level and household size. Information on our Charity Care Program can be found here.
If you have insurance and are concerned about your copayment amounts, please call your health insurance provider for your benefits. If you need additional assistance, you can contact the Roswell Park financial counselors at 716-845-4782. If you do not have insurance, please contact the Roswell Park financial counselors for a cost estimate for your care.
