New patient referrals

Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center accepts all individuals with a suspicion or diagnosis of cancer or related disease. Patients may be referred by a physician or may directly seek consultation and treatment. The Patient Referral office is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call 716-845-RPMD (716-845-7763) to seek a consultation with one of the physicians on staff, a second opinion for one of your patients, or to refer a patient.

Patient hospital-based transfers

If a physician from an outside hospital feels transfer to Roswell Park is warranted, they should call the Roswell Park Transfer Line at 716-845-4358. During business hours, Monday through Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., calls are handled directly by the Transfer Center. After 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, weekends and holidays, calls will be answered by the operator, and transferred to the Patient Care Coordinator who will further assist you. Once it is determined that transfer is appropriate, the Transfer Team/Patient Care Coordinator will facilitate the transfer by confirming physician acceptance, bed availability, and insurance approval.

Non-English speaking patients

Patients who do not speak English or who prefer to speak a language other than English have easy access to interpreters. Interpreter services are available to our patients at any point during their time at Roswell Park, with services available in more than 240 languages. Interpreter services are accessible in person, over the phone, or on video, through iPads provided by your social worker.

Insurance

Because our physicians are categorized as sub-specialists in most health insurance provider manuals, you may not be aware whether your patient’s health insurance company will authorize treatment at Roswell Park. Our practice plan has contracts in place with major local, regional, and national insurance companies. We will work with you, your patient, and/or the insurance company to acquire the proper authorization.

Programs for patients at high risk

The Breast Cancer Risk Assessment and Prevention Program is for women who are at above-average risk of breast cancer. The program provides these women with: a comprehensive breast cancer risk assessment; regular clinical breast exams; breast imaging; and, when appropriate, genetic counseling and testing. In addition, they are counseled on options for reducing breast cancer risk and on available clinical research studies in risk evaluation and cancer prevention.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States, killing more people each year than all other major cancers combined. The earlier the disease is detected, the better the chances for cure. At Roswell Park, we offer a comprehensive screening program that combines the best tools available — spiral CT and auto-fluorescent bronchoscopy (AFB) — to screen high-risk people, monitor for early cancerous changes and catch lung cancer at the most curable stages. Ovarian cancer is difficult to detect, with only about 10 percent found in the early stages. Roswell Park’s High Risk Ovarian Cancer Clinic is set up to help women with known risk factors be proactive in catching the disease early. The High Risk Clinic offers a comprehensive ovarian cancer risk assessment, genetic counseling, risk reduction strategies and access to clinical research studies. These services are available to women who face above-average risk.

Pancreatic cancer is called a silent killer because it often grows or spreads undetected. But if caught early, pancreatic cancer is treatable and potentially curable. And like many cancers, it presents few warning signs. If you have a family history of pancreatic cancer, you may be eligible for our pancreatic cancer screening program.
