If you’re a teacher, professor, or parent, we have the information you need to help your student determine if a Roswell Park summer program is a good fit for their academic and career path.

What it is

The summer education programs at Roswell Park offer hands-on cancer research and oncology experience for students who have a keen interest in science and are considering advanced education in science and a career in scientific research.

How it works

Summer programs take place between June and August to allow students to commit full time to their research experience.

Applicants rank their choice of research areas at Roswell Park. They are rated and matched with a mentor to be placed in the program through a mutual selection system.

  • Biophysics
  • Biochemistry
  • Tumor immunology
  • Genomics
  • Cancer pathology
  • Cancer prevention/epidemiology
  • Molecular biology
  • Cell biology
  • Cancer genetics
  • Molecular pharmacology
  • Cancer therapeutic development

Medical/PA/Nursing students also have a choice of clinical research experiences in medicine, radiation medicine, and surgical oncology.

What they learn

The core research experience is supported by learning and career development activities. Students learn about pertinent and relevant cancer topics during weekly seminars, including:

  • Principles of scientific communication
  • Research ethics
  • Cancer health disparities
  • Novel experimental therapies

Each program concludes with a research conference for interns to present their research work. All students give a poster presentation.

College students also attend a retreat, engaging in informal scientific exchange with students and faculty from a variety of cancer science and oncology disciplines, and give a scientific talk complementing their research poster at the Biomedical Research Day at the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.

Providing references

Program applicants are asked to provide contact information for a reference in the online application. References will be solicited by email to submit an online recommendation.

If you are asked to be a reference, or anticipate being a reference, please be sure to adjust your email account’s spam filter to accept emails from the domain: “roswellpark.org.”
