BUFFALO, N.Y. — Becker’s Hospital Review, a leading healthcare industry news source, has recognized Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center President Candace S. Johnson, PhD, among its “177 Women Hospital Presidents and CEOs to Know,” noting her accomplishments as a pioneer in her field and a passionate advocate for emerging leaders.

The executives recognized in the feature “are expanding access to care, promoting inclusivity and diversity, spearheading new initiatives and helping to close the gender gap in healthcare leadership,” Becker’s notes. Dr. Johnson has been pivotal in expanding Roswell Park’s programs in immunotherapy, cellular therapies and community engagement and has steered the organization through significant growth in staff and patients served.

Dr. Johnson’s priorities as she leads the Buffalo-based cancer center include “recruiting top talent, approaching cancer research with compassion and empathy, and improving the patient journey,” Becker’s writes. “She is also passionate about promoting diversity, and advocates strongly to place women and minorities in leadership positions.”

Dr. Johnson leads a team of more than 3,900 as President, CEO and M&T Bank Presidential Chair in Leadership at Roswell Park. She joined the cancer center in 2002 and was appointed to her current role in 2015 — becoming the first female across the nation to lead a freestanding cancer center.
