Roswell Park Study Published by Media Around the U.S.

Melanoma rates increase dramatically among young people over the last four decades

More than 150 news organizations from around the country have published stories about the award-winning research conducted by Roswell Park scientists and recently presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).

Demytra Mitsis, MD and Nikhil I. Khushalani, MD, co-authors of the study, found that the incidence of melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer, has increased by more than 250% among children, adolescents and young adults over a period of four decades.

Dr. Khushalani says, “The reality is that melanoma is the third most common cancer in those 15 to 39 years old, and these numbers have been steadily increasing. This is a national problem that needs to be addressed, and it begins with awareness and effective prevention strategies.”

The story was published by US News and Health Day.

Television stations from Roanoke, Virginia to Las Vegas, Nevada; — Columbus, Ohio to Tulsa, Oklahoma published the story.
