Local Teens Gather to Show Tobacco Industry They’ve “Seen Enough!”

This afternoon, more than 30 local teenagers will gather at Clarence High School for an event to spread awareness of the dangers of in-store tobacco marketing.

The event, held in conjunction with World No Tobacco Day, will feature youth speaking out against the tobacco industry’s marketing to children, as well as individuals writing “We’ve seen enough” on their hands and covering their eyes for photographs.

Students from Clarence and Kenmore West high schools and representatives from the Amherst Youth Consortium, Reality Check and the Erie-Niagara Tobacco-Free Coalition will participate in the event.

The Erie-Niagara Tobacco-Free Coalition has launched a social-media campaign on Facebook and Twitter in connection with this international initiative. Participants will change their Facebook statuses to “I’ve Seen Enough!” to reflect their opposition to the tobacco industry’s marketing toward children. Twitter users will tweet the same message, using the hashtag  “#WorldNoTobaccoDay.”

Additionally, a petition in support of reducing the visibility of tobacco marketing to children has been created on http://www.tobaccofreenys.org/, and has gathered nearly 250 signatures.
