Many Roswell Park patients are eligible to enroll in clinical trials — research studies designed to evaluate promising new medical treatments, new ways of preventing cancer or new ways of using existing treatments, such as surgery or radiation therapy.
Clinical trials can offer access to treatments that may not be available elsewhere. Through clinical trials, Roswell Park patients were among the first to benefit from trastuzumab/Herceptin® (breast cancer), imatinib/Gleevec® (leukemia), ipilimumab/Yervoy® (melanoma) and many other treatments that are now FDA-approved.
Clinical trials currently underway at Roswell Park for head and neck cancer involve combining radiation treatments with different types of drugs, new ways of delivering photodynamic therapy (PDT), and new treatments combining immunotherapy with other agents.
