Why it matters for prostate cancer
In about 15 to 20% of the prostate cases we review, the diagnosis — or risk group assessment — is changed, impacting your treatment options, decisions to make, and the way forward. This means that:
- You may not need cancer treatment after all. Most men with low-risk prostate cancer do not need treatment right away, or ever. With active surveillance, we carefully monitor your cancer with timely exams, PSA testing, prostate MRI and biopsy (if needed) and proceed to treatment only if necessary. This allows you to delay — or avoid altogether — side effects from surgery or radiation.
- You may benefit from HIFU therapy. This new outpatient treatment, High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) therapy, uses ultrasound waves to destroy cancerous prostate tissue without removing the prostate gland.
- You may need to consider surgery. It’s important to consider all possible options based on your cancer’s accurate diagnosis and risk assessment, as well as learn about your potential surgeon’s experience with minimally invasive robotic surgery, success rates and ability to preserve erectile function and continence.
