Our urologic team will discuss every way possible to treat your cancer if you are not a candidate for surgery.

What is Combined Modality Therapy?

Combined Modality Therapy is a bladder-preserving treatment option for patients who are unable to have cystectomy (surgery to remove the bladder) due to other medical problems. Combined modality therapy (CMT) may be an alternative option for patients who refuse surgery in order to keep their bladder. CMT consists of three types of treatment:

  • Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumor (TURBT) to remove as much of the bladder tumor as possible, while leaving the bladder in place.
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy

CMT may be recommended for you depending on your disease type, cancer stage, kidney function and health status. Although CMT seems promising in selected patients, it’s not yet recommended as standard first-line treatment for muscle-invasive bladder cancer.
