Cancer Survivor and Sister Challenge Community to Join Them at Carly’s Crossing 2009

Swimmer celebrates two years of her brother’s survivorship by helping raise funds for pediatric cancer research at Roswell Park

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Buffalo, NY Jeannine McNamara, a swimmer in Carly’s Crossing 2009, and her brother Sean, a two-year cancer survivor, will speak on Buffalo’s waterfront today to share their inspirational story and encourage their fellow Western New Yorkers to join them at the August 16 swimming event. Carly’s Crossing, presented by Creditors Interchange, supports Carly’s Club for Kids and Cancer Research at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The McNamaras will be joined at Gallagher Beach, the site of Carly's Crossing, by event volunteers and participants, as well as other cancer survivors and Carly’s Club members. Carly’s Crossing is one of Western New York’s only open-water swim events, featuring both timed and non-competitive courses and a post-event family-friendly party on the beach.

Ms. McNamara, a swimmer and intern in Roswell Park’s Health Behavior department, participates in Carly’s Crossing as a way to express her gratitude for her brother’s survivorship and the care he received at Roswell Park. Sean, who was diagnosed when he was 13 years old, will celebrate two years of remission this year.

Approximately 300 swimmers are expected at this year’s Carly’s Crossing, which features options of one-mile and 600-yard non-competitive courses, as well as a one-mile timed course. The event is open to competitive and recreational swimmers of all ages who raised a minimum of $100 in pledges. To register or for more information, visit Carlys Crossing or call (716) 845-8788.
