More than 150 Lake Shore Teens and Staff to “Go Bald for Bucks” in Support of Cancer Patients
Students, faculty and staff to shave their heads in solidarity with Roswell Park patients at eighth-annual fundraiser

BUFFALO, NY On March 13, 2009, more than 150 students, faculty and staff at Lake Shore High School will shave their heads or cut at least ten inches of their hair to support cancer patients at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center—America’s first cancer center. The participants also have collected pledges to help find cures and save lives through the Institute’s research. High school cosmetology students from Erie 2 BOCES will volunteer their time and services to perform the cutting and shaving. In all, approximately 1,500 students from across Western New York will be part of this year’s “Goin Bald for Bucks” effort involving 20 additional schools and businesses.

Goin’ Bald for Bucks was founded in 2002 by Lake Shore teacher Anthony George to honor and support his sister, Cathleen, who lost her battle with cancer in 2004. Since then, schools and businesses throughout Western New York have raised more than $500,000 and counting.

“Nearly everyone has been affected by cancer, whether through the diagnosis of a friend or family member or through their own battle against the disease,” said George. “This event is an easy, fun way for the community to stand in solidarity with patients and help support the critical work being done at Roswell Park.” 

The Goin’ Bald for Bucks 2009 campaign kicked off on March 4 at Roswell Park when the Institute’s own staff went bald for the cause. More than twenty additional Western New York schools and businesses are already registered to have their students and employees clip, snip and shave their ways toward cancer cures throughout the upcoming months.
