Why it matters for pancreatic cancer
A precise and accurate diagnosis and staging, and a treatment plan delivered by a multidisciplinary team of experts who focus on pancreatic cancer every day, is essential to:
- Determine whether your pancreas tumor is resectable — can be completely removed by surgery. At Roswell Park, that decision is made collaboratively with the surgical, medical and radiation oncologists working together, considering all options, including whether a previously unresectable tumor can be treated with chemotherapy and radiation first to shrink it enough to be reevaluated as resectable.
- Achieve optimal surgical outcomes. A surgeon’s experience matters. Because pancreas procedures are highly complex operations, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network advises patients to seek care from a surgical facility that performs at least 15 of these operations a year. Roswell Park performs more than 100 each year.
- Provide access to clinical trials of the newest options. Pancreatic cancer remains a deadly cancer. Existing therapies have limited long-term benefits. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network recommends that all patients should be considered for participation in clinical trials and that a clinical trial option, if available, is preferred. At Roswell Park, we have a robust clinical trial program for patients with pancreatic cancer of any disease stage.
