Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center is one of the few NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers that have a cancer-focused memorandum of understanding at the federal level with the Indian Health Services (IHS). The first MOU with Roswell Park covered 2016-2021 and this renewal will extend the agreement to 2027. The MOU is a critical document that outlines the importance of data sovereignty as it relates to scientific research. It also serves as a framework for scientists to understand how Indigenous data can and will be used for the purposes of scientific research. Furthermore, it is an acknowledgment to honor the wishes of tribal communities to have complete ownership of any data collected from their territories. An MOU establishes trust between a tribal partner and external entities such as the Department of Indigenous Cancer Health. Strengthening relationships and enhancing transparency.
