Department of Indigenous Cancer Health adds Tobacco Treatment Specialist Program

Multiple mechanisms supported a grant award to the Department of Indigenous Cancer Health and Services to adapt a Tobacco Treatment Specialist Program for Indigenous communities. Lung cancer is one of the top cancers in the Northeast among Indigenous Peoples. The quality improvement program will work with Indigenous patient navigators and hire local Native community members along with service provider allies to adapt and co-create a TTS (Tobacco Treatment Specialist) program specific for tobacco treatment that is culturally tailored. An additional benefit to the community includes scholarships for tribes and organizations serving Indigenous community members to become TTS certified. The grant is led by Rodney Haring, PhD, MSW, as part of the service arm of the Center for Indigenous efforts at Roswell Park along with psychologist Christine Sheffer, PhD, of Roswell Park’s Department of Cancer Health Behavior.
