Our pediatric cancer center specialists treat children of all ages who have been diagnosed with a solid tumor. A solid malignant tumor is a mass of cells that grow uncontrollably, invade other tissues and spread to other parts of the body. Solid tumors account for about 30% of pediatric cancers.
The types of cancer we treat at Roswell Park Oishei Children’s include:
- Retinoblastoma – This cancer affects the retina at the back of the eye.
- Sarcomas – Including bone cancers such as osteosarcoma, Ewing sarcoma and soft tissue sarcomas. The most common type of sarcoma in children is rhabdomyosarcoma, a cancer of muscle, tendon, cartilage or bone.
- Wilms' Tumor – A form of kidney cancer that typically occurs in children.
- Neuroblastoma – A cancer of the peripheral nervous system that is common in children.
- Germ Cell Tumors – These tumors start from germ cells, typically in the testes or ovaries.
We offer highly advanced methods for testing and treating our patients called OmniSeq Comprehensive, a molecular test that zeroes in on 144 of the most relevant genes. We also offer Omniseq Immune Report Card, an assay that helps to identify best immunotherapy treatments.These methods helps us come up with a treatment plan that is tailored to pediatric patients with solid tumor-based cancer.
As leaders in research, we are always working to add the latest and best clinical trials and new types of therapies into our treatments.
We are pleased to offer integrative medicine as well, which is focused on care for the child’s whole being – body, mind, and spirit. Patients may receive aromatherapy, massage therapy, and Reiki.
Another area of care we focus on is nutrition, which is a major part of treating childhood cancers.

Our physicians create an individual treatment plan for every child.
Treatment for solid tumors typically include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy or a mix of these.
Not only do we have specialized physicians, we also have an outstanding psychosocial team that includes dedicated psychologists, child life specialists and social workers to help your child and family.
Our facilities
The John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital is our standalone children’s hospital and a partner of Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center.
We designed our facility with pediatric patients and their families in mind. Children do not have to stay only in their rooms. They are free to walk the hallways and enjoy the playrooms in our bright and airy center.
The family area is a great place to visit with other parents and families, while still being able to keep an eye on your child.
Our Child Life Specialists help your child pass the time in the clinic or during treatment with activities such as playing games and playing with toys, watching movies and doing crafts.
The Katherine, Anne and Donna Gioia Pediatric Hematology Oncology Outpatient Center is a state-of-the-art facility providing infusion and patient care areas.
