Community First: How outreach and engagement drive Indigenous cancer research

If you have been a follower of our work, you may wonder why you do not see us wearing long white coats in a laboratory.  Our views of scientific research stem from stereotypical images on TV, the internet, and social media. However, in our world research looks and feels much different than what you might expect. For example, much of the work in the Department of Indigenous Cancer Health relies on conversation and feedback from our Indigenous communities. Not just locally, but nationally and internationally. In other words, it is the voice and experience of Indigenous Peoples that help us frame how we will study cancer and its impacts. Without the voices, we cannot know with precision how to translate cancer research into actionable steps. Sadly, some cancer research lacks a community-first component that limits its potential impact on the community. The strength of our work comes from our commitment to outreach and engagement as a pillar of our mission. If you or your organization would like to host the Department of Indigenous Cancer Health at any community event, or speaking engagement please contact Community Relations Coordinator at William.Maybee@RoswellPark.org.
