Roswell Park Celebrates National Native American Heritage Month

Gehnew Printup and Tosh Hamby , performers from the Tuscarora Nation, sang a traditional song in Kaminski Park in commemoration of Native American Heritage Month.

Each November, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center partners with the Department of Indigenous Cancer Health and the Office of Diversity & Inclusion to host a safe gathering with community members to celebrate National Native American Heritage Month. This year, the event engaged Roswell Park colleagues to learn about Indigenous communities and cancer health from Director Rodney Haring, PhD; Seneca Nation Councilor Tina Abrams; Roswell Park leadership; and singers and dancers from the Tuscarora Nation. After the celebrations at Roswell Park, the singers from Tuscarora offered a song as healing medicine for patients in the hospital. Together, we continue to educate and engage the Roswell Park community about the diversity, strength, and resiliency amongst Indigenous communities and leaders. We honor Indigenous Peoples’ contributions to cancer research and the cancer care continuum.
