New Year, New Beginning: What’s Your Resolution?

With each new year comes a sense of hope. An opportunity to set ambitious goals, break bad habits and learn from past mistakes. It’s a free pass at a fresh start with endless possibilities for growth. But when you’re battling cancer, the promise of a new year is stifled by the stress of a life threatening illness.

AYA cancer survivors Corrie O’Hara and Mary Flanigan battled cancer at a crucial time in their lives. In the midst of high school homecoming and college preparations, a shocking diagnosis stopped them in their tracks. Isolation and fear set in as they questioned their future. Feeling vulnerable to change, they looked to each other for support. Bonding during treatment, they quickly became friends and found solace during a scary time. This camaraderie helped them find the strength to fight.

Through the hardships and setbacks, they continued to keep a positive attitude. Now cancer free, this journey left them with a unique outlook on life that fuels their ambition. They share their new year’s resolutions and some advice on how to make each day count.

If you haven’t set a New Year’s resolution yet, it’s not too late. Here are a few ways to make this a great year.

  • I will never give up hope for a cure.
  • I will smile every morning and be thankful for another day.
  • I will remember to appreciate everyone that supports me.
  • I will remember that I am beautiful regardless of how my body changes during treatment.
  • I will keep in touch with the friends I made during treatment so they know I am still there for them.
  • I will celebrate the small victories each day.
  • I will remember that cancer doesn’t define me.
  • I will take one day at a time.
  • I will try to keep my body strong and at least go for a walk everyday.
  • If my cancer should return, I will continue to fight as hard as I can.
