Symptoms of Adrenal Gland Tumors

Not all adrenal cancers produce symptoms that you would notice. A nonfunctional tumor, which does not produce hormones, may not have any signs. A functional tumor may cause symptoms if it produces excessive levels of hormones, and the symptoms that result will vary according to which hormone is being overproduced. A tumor may also cause symptoms if it grows large enough to push on other nearby organs.

Most functional tumors in the adrenal gland are benign and not cancerous, however, the excess hormones may cause other health problems that might cause symptoms and need treatment. Be sure to tell your doctor if you experience any of the following:

  • Unexplained weight gain or weight loss
  • Weakness
  • Anxiety
  • Irregular or racing heartbeat
  • High blood pressure
  • High blood sugar
  • Pink or purple stretch marks on the skin
  • Hormonal changes such as excess facial hair, hair loss on the head, irregular periods, enlarged breast tissue, shrinking testicles
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Back pain
  • Fever or sweats and flushing
  • Loss of appetite
  • Frequent urination
  • Feeling thirsty

These symptoms may be the result of a condition other than cancer. If you are experiencing any of the above, you should speak with your physician to determine the exact cause.
