About Katie Carlberg

Biography:

My name is Dr. Katie Carlberg and I’m a pediatric hematologist / oncologist with a focus on the diagnosis and management of children with a variety of benign hematologic disorders such as immune cytopenias, bleeding and clotting disorders, bone marrow failure syndromes, hemoglobinopathies, and other red blood cell disorders and anemias. I completed my training in the Bay Area before working in Seattle, WA for five years. There I was fortunate to care for and learn from patients and families living with Sickle Cell Anemia and Thalassemia. Expanding these specific programs dovetailed with my role as co-chair of the Blood Usage Committee where I worked closely with the Transfusion Medicine service to ensure dissemination and implementation of best practices and guidelines for transfusion support, engage staff in blood-sparing initiatives, continuously review transfusion metrics, guide decisions around inventory changes, and help navigate shortages.

Throughout my training and early career, I remained focused on providing care with compassion and respect. I was inducted into the SUNY Upstate Medical University Gold Humanism Honors Society, awarded the University of Wisconsin Pediatric Department Patient and Family Centered Care Award, as well as the Teaching Fellow of the Year Award at Children’s Hospital and Research Center Oakland. I am thrilled to bring my experience and passion for clinical care back home, to Upstate, NY, where I grew up.

Along with my role at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, I am also a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedicine Science at the State University of New York at Buffalo and see patients at Western New York Blood Center. When not at work, I enjoys spending time with my family and friends, doing anything outdoors (picking blueberries, eating ice cream, swimming in the lake, skiing down a mountain, or just playing in the mud)!
