Description of Duties

A postdoctoral position is open for a highly motivated candidate in the laboratory of Dr. Veena Prahlad, Department of Cell Stress Biology, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, Buffalo NY. Roswell Park is a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The broad research goals of the Prahlad lab are to understand the role of the nervous system in controlling the stress response pathways of other cells through neuroendocrine molecules and trophic interactions [Prahlad et al., Science 2008, Prahlad & Morimoto, PNAS 2011, Tatum et al., Current Biology 2015, Ooi and Prahlad, Science Signaling 2017, Das et al., eLife 2020, Das, Min and Prahlad, Mol. Cell 2021, Godthi, et al., PNAS 2024]. This question is relevant to the role of nerves in cancer and is integral for understanding several proteotoxic diseases.

The postdoctoral research project specifically centers around understanding the mechanisms and consequences of serotonergic modulation of the heat shock transcription factor 1 (HSF1) and the downstream epigenetic alterations induced by serotonin. This position is supported by grants from the National Institutes of Aging (NIA), and National Institutes of Mental Health (NIMH) and Roswell Park Cancer Institute. The broad approach to address this question can exploit the metazoan model, C. elegans and/ or the use of cell culture and mouse models of disease. The approach will leverage the state-of-the art facilities at Roswell Park, and will include optogenetic, genetic, molecular and genomic tools to ultimately integrate physiological, behavioral, cellular, and genomic readouts of neuron-tissue interactions. Any additional training necessary for success in the project will be provided.

Qualifications

The search is primarily targeted towards scientists who are completing their PhD in any area of cell biology, cancer biology or neuroscience or have recently graduated. Prior experience working with C. elegans, cell culture systems or mouse models is required. The candidate should have at least one first author publication from their Ph.D work. The highly motivated candidate should be able to work independently, should possess a deep desire to solve problems, and should have outstanding organizational skills.

Applicant Instructions

Interested applicants should send a cover letter highlighting your past research experience and interests, CV, and contact information for at least 3 references to Dr. Veena Prahlad at Veena.Prahlad@RoswellPark.org.
