The Roswell Park PGY-2 Investigational Drugs and Research (IDR) Residency Program builds upon the foundations of pharmacy practice from residents' previous experiences through their PharmD. education and their PGY-1 residency.

With that in mind, our program is designed to advance the knowledge and capabilities of pharmacists to become leaders within the ever-changing and complex research operation.

Our residents will work directly with world-renowned clinical research physicians, with a strong focus on early phase clinical trials. Graduates of our program will gain expertise in the regulatory requirements that govern clinical research, become adept in the clinical care of research subjects, and demonstrate skill in the processes required to support clinical research — from opening clinical trials, to pharmacy operations and clinical care of research subjects, through trial closure.

The purpose of the Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center’s PGY-2 Investigational Drugs and Research (IDR) Residency is to develop pharmacist leaders with the necessary expertise to design and implement clinical trials, ensure data integrity, manage the care of research subjects, and maintain pharmacy systems consistent with best practices in IDS.

Core rotations

The activities associated with clinical research can fluctuate in intensity depending on several variables, including resident interest and other scheduling considerations. As such, most of the rotations will be longitudinal in nature to allow you to get a richer set of experiences.

Introductory blocks are completed during the first 12 weeks, including Orientation and Introduction to Investigational Drug Service, Protocol Development and Management Orientation, Early Phase Clinical Trials Clinical Support Orientation, and Leukemia Clinical Trials Clinical Support Orientation. After completing the introductory blocks, the resident’s day-to-day schedule will be created every 2 weeks.

The preceptors declare what meetings (SIVs, IRB, etc.) are scheduled for the next 2 weeks. A schedule is established such that the resident will spend 1 day per week staffing with the operations rotation, 1 day per week in the Early Phase Clinical Trials Clinic, and an average of 1 day per week with Protocol Development and Management. The remaining time will be filled out with longitudinal activities relating to ACTG Informatics, Leukemia Clinical Trial Clinical Support, Medication Safety, as well as time to prepare for IRB meetings, preceptorship, and for research. This schedule is created by the RPD (or designee) in conjunction with the resident, such that expectations are established but not overwhelming.

Note that not every learning experience will be active during every schedule — for example, IRB meetings are once a month. When a meeting is scheduled, time will be allotted for preparation and attendance. If there is no meeting, there will be no activities for that learning experience during that 2 week block. The longitudinal schedule is suspended for the 6-week Leadership and Administration Learning Experience and for a self-improvement/research/staffing month after ASHP Midyear.

*Blocks can be shifted for preceptor scheduling purposes in order to maximize their availability to the resident.
