Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center is a well-known surgical, oncological, and research center for Genitourinary (GU) malignancies.
The GU service has been named for high-performance subspecialty in the past several years by US News and World Report. The GU pathology service processes more than 2,000 cases per year, among which approximately 50% of cases are consults from outside institutes around the country.
Fellowship highlights
This one-year GU pathology fellowship will provide intensive training in all aspects of GU pathology. The fellow is the front line of screening, triaging, and managing each case, and works on ancillary studies and diagnoses with the attending pathologist. In addition to signing out cases with attending pathologists, the fellow presents interesting cases and leads discussion with peers and faculty members. The fellow is encouraged to teach pathology residents and other junior trainees. The fellow grosses complicated cases to gain advanced knowledge of the organ system.
There is a strong training infrastructure, including daily double-scope with GU pathologists, consensus meetings, interesting case conferences, multidisciplinary tumor boards, and localized prostate consortium conferences. Program faculty provide didactic lectures regularly. The fellow is encouraged to engage in translational research projects with the intent to present their work at national meetings and/or to publish their work.
At the conclusion of the fellowship year, the fellow is expected to:
- Be sufficiently skilled in GU pathology to perform independently in a practice setting
- Understand the wide range of diagnostic pitfalls and approaches to recognizing and minimizing diagnostic errors in GU pathology
- Have the skills to organize and complete a clinical research project
- Have developed the necessary teaching skills and experience to serve as a competent mentor to junior colleagues.
Rotations and curriculum
The fellow has 9 months of GU Pathology rotations, 1 month of protected research time, and 2 months of electives (such as Molecular Pathology, Cytology and other surgical pathology subspecialties). The fellow has the option to forego elective rotations and continue with GU Pathology.
Throughout all rotations, the fellow covers Frozen Sections service for up to 5 days per month – a highlight for our fellows and an excellent chance for graduated responsibilities.
