Caregivers Connect emphasizes self-care for caregivers

If you’ve been on an airplane, chances are you’ve seen the signs warning you to put on your own oxygen mask first. This guideline holds true for caregivers, too, especially caregivers of those going through cancer treatment. Thankfully, a new program at Roswell Park aims to care for the ones giving care — and it’s all thanks to the support of donors like you.

Caregivers Connect is a new program that’s fully funded by donors through Roswell Park’s Quality of Life program. Conceived by Resource Center Manager Rebecca Colville and spearheaded in partnership with Senior Resource Center Coordinator Theresa Bonito, this program is designed to nourish the mind, body and spirit of caregivers.

“Caregivers play an essential role in the healing journey, and this initiative focuses on providing them with resources, education and emotional support to help navigate the challenges of caring for a loved one,” says Vice President of Patient Care Kim Sweeney. “By investing in patient caregivers, we not only improve their experience but also enhance outcomes for the patients they support.”

A Whole-Person Approach that Extends to Caregivers
Roswell Park believes in treating the whole person. This extends to a patient’s support system. Caregivers are often on call for their loved ones and put their loved one’s needs before their own. Long days with few breaks, coupled with the emotional challenge of seeing a loved one in treatment, can take a toll. Providing caregivers with a space to connect, recharge and manage their own care can strengthen a caregiver’s resolve and allow them to better support their loved ones.

Caregivers Connect meets the second Wednesday of every month at The 11 Day Power Play Cancer Resource Center. It is more than a traditional support group. With learning opportunities, uplifting talks and resources specifically tailored to caregivers, plus hands-on activities like crafts and skill-building workshops, this powerful program allows caregivers to connect with others who understand their journey. At the same time, the program aims to provide a space for self-care, strengthening caregiver resolve and resiliency.

“Many step into the caregiver role with little notice or preparation, often placing their own well-being aside as they focus on others,” Sweeney says. “Caregivers Connect brings caregivers together to honor their dedication and resilience and celebrate the meaningful work they do each day.”
