On the Front Lines: Sgt. Michael Garguiolo

Sgt. Michael Garguiolo

Our Public Safety team is always present on campus to keep us safe while sharing a smile, a friendly hello and some needed assistance. They are our protectors and often go above and beyond the call of duty.

Sgt. Michael Garguiolo is no exception. Capt. Gordon Carpenter, Special Police Captain at Roswell Park, describes him as "selfless, hard-working and determined. He is an excellent representative of Public Safety.”

Sgt. Garguiolo came to Roswell Park in 2019 after serving as a law enforcement officer in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He and his wife wanted to be closer to family, and a few friends mentioned Roswell Park as a great place to work. Since he started here, he’s been touched by the connection many of his colleagues make with patients. “My coworker came in on his day off for a pediatric cancer patient’s Victory Bell ringing,” he notes as an example of our Public Safety officers’ commitment that extends beyond their typical roles.

Sgt. Garguiolo’s “natural ability to defuse situations and effectively get the job done” underscores that commitment, especially in light of recent anxieties surrounding COVID-19, according to Capt. Carpenter. When patients, caregivers and employees come into the building outside of normal office hours, screening is performed by Public Safety officers, who have taken this new responsibility in stride — and that includes Sgt. Garguiolo. “He never fails to serve Roswell Park in any capacity, screening patients, visitors and staff alike while ensuring the safety and security of the entire campus,” Capt. Carpenter says.

For Sgt. Garguiolo, the best part of his job is getting to know people and helping them out. He says he finds inspiration in little celebrations each day. He believes Public Safety is here to help, regardless of how small we think a problem might be. “People don’t always call right away, but that’s what we’re here for. Please don’t hesitate! We’re more than happy to come and hang out and see what’s going on,” he says.

Thank you, Sgt. Garguiolo, and thanks to the entire Public Safety team for keeping a close eye on Roswell Park!
