Highlights
  • These researchers led studies cited in top 1% of publications in given field
  • Dr. Puzanov led decade-long look at treatment in advanced melanoma
  • Drs. Hyland, Goniewicz provide insights on tobacco and e-cigarette use

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Igor Puzanov, MD, MSCI, FACP, Andrew Hyland, PhD, and Maciej Goniewicz, PhD, PharmD, have all recently been recognized as global scientific pioneers on Clarivate Plc’s Highly Cited Researchers list for 2020.

The listed recognizes researchers who have demonstrated “significant influence” through papers that have been highly cited, or referred to in publications from other researchers, over the last 10 years. Drs. Puzanov, Hyland and Goniewicz have all authored publications that rank in the top 1% for their given field.

Recent projects from these scientists are outlined below.

Igor Puzanov, MD, MSCI, FACP
Dr. Igor Puzanov

Dr. Igor Puzanov, Senior Vice President of Clinical Investigation, Director of the Center for Early Phase Clinical Trials, Chief of Melanoma: Dr. Puzanov was lead author on a 10-year retrospective look at three randomized clinical trials of patients with advanced melanoma. Published in JAMA Oncology in July, the study supported the use of pembrolizumab (brand name Keytruda) in treatment, reinforcing how immunotherapies can improve quality of life and even lead to cures.

Andrew Hyland, PhD
Dr. Andrew Hyland

Dr. Andrew Hyland, Chair of Health Behavior: The ongoing Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study, of which Dr. Hyland is scientific lead, revealed in late May that e-cigarette usage is not nearly as persistent as cigarette smoking. This work was published in the journal Tobacco Control. PATH is the largest prospective study on tobacco use undertaken by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Maciej Goniewicz, PhD, PharmD
Dr. Maciej Goniewicz

Dr. Maciej Goniewicz: Funded by a prestigious five-year, $19.05 million National Cancer Institute grant, Dr. Goniewicz and the WNY Center for Research on Flavored Tobacco Products (CRoFT) are examining both combustible and electronic tobacco products. Projects include investigating flavorant toxicity, respiratory health effects of flavors and more. This year, Dr. Goniewicz also helped contribute to a research letter published in the New England Journal of Medicine regarding the effects of a cutting agent, vitamin E acetate, used in illicit cannabis vaping products.

“In the race for knowledge, it is human capital that is fundamental and this list identifies and celebrates exceptional individual researchers at Roswell Park who are having a great impact on the research community as measured by the rate at which their work is being cited by others,” says David Pendlebury, Senior Citiation Research Analyst at Clarivate.
