BUFFALO, N.Y. — It’s estimated that there are more than 15.5 million cancer survivors living in the United States, with that number expected to rise dramatically over the next two decades. While the increase reflects significant treatment advances, it also underscores the fact that millions of cancer survivors are likely to face various medical, psychological, spiritual and emotional issues stemming directly from their disease or the treatments they’ve received.

Recognizing the importance of helping cancer survivors to navigate and address these long-term impacts, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center is hosting Chapter 2: A Cancer Survivor’s Workshop for Living Your Best Life on June 16 and 17. This two-day event, to be held on the Roswell Park campus, will be a comprehensive and interactive workshop open to all cancer patients, survivors and their caregivers.

“Surviving cancer is cause for exuberant celebration, but it also initiates a new series of questions, concerns and priorities,” says Mary Reid, PhD, MSPH, Director of Cancer Screening and Survivorship at Roswell Park. “ ‘Chapter 2’ is a way to help cancer survivors and their loved ones process this transition and learn about resources and strategies that can help them stay on top of their mental, physical, spiritual and emotional well-being.”

The Friday evening sessions run from 6 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. and include a screening of “The C Word,” a feature film executive-produced by Morgan Freeman, and a Q&A session with a multidisciplinary panel of experts.

The full-day program on Saturday will run from 7:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. and will include a morning Pi-Yo yoga/Pilates session; a panel discussion on “Managing Your Short- and Long-Term Challenges”; a presentation by Roswell Park’s Lynda Kwon Beaupin, MD, on “Establishing Your Care Plan After Treatment”; and breakout sessions where participants will select three activities from a range of offerings including Pilates, storytelling, laughter yoga, tai chi, drumming, acupuncture and spirituality.

Also on Saturday, integrative-medicine expert Alejandro Chaoul, PhD, will give a keynote address entitled “From the Himalayas to the Clinic: Mind-Body Practices in Integrative Health.” An Assistant Professor and Director of Education at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center’s Integrative Medicine Program, Dr. Chaoul teaches Tibetan meditation and mind-body on three continents.

Preregistration by June 8 is required. There is a fee of $20, which covers meals throughout the event. Registration is available at roswellpark.org/survivorsday or by calling 1-877-ASK-Roswell Park.
