Overcoming Treatment Resistance in Prostate Cancer: Roswell Park Team Proposes a New Strategy

Researchers have discovered what may be a promising new approach for controlling aggressive, treatment-resistant forms of prostate cancer. New Approach, New Hope: State Investment Will Fast-Track Innovative Roswell Park Research in Ovarian Cancer

Researchers at Roswell Park Cancer Institute have received a prestigious grant of nearly $12 million from the New York State Stem Cell Science Program to develop new therapies for advanced ovarian cancer. The four-year, $11.9 million grant to RPCI is one of three new state awards totaling $36 million to support innovative approaches for developing stem-cell based therapies for diseases that are notoriously hard to treat.

Roswell Park Surgeons Compile New Anthology on Surgery for Stomach, Esophageal Cancers

Two Roswell Park Cancer Institute surgeons have produced a new, comprehensive guide on minimally invasive surgical approaches for treating cancers of the stomach and esophagus. Published by Springer, the anthology, “Minimally Invasive Foregut Surgery for Malignancy: Principles and Practice,” was edited by Steven Hochwald, MD, FACS, Chief of Gastrointestinal Surgery and Vice Chair of the Department of Surgical Oncology, and Moshim Kukar, MD, a newly appointed faculty member in the RPCI Department of Surgical Oncology.

Roswell Park Study Suggests Additional Applications for FL118 as Personalized Therapy for Cancer

A team led by Fengzhi Li, PhD, and Xinjiang Wang, PhD, of Roswell Park Cancer Institute has reported new findings regarding therapeutic targets of the novel anticancer agent FL118. Previous studies from these researchers have showed that FL118 induces cancer cell death, or apoptosis, by inhibiting expression of multiple cell-survival proteins (survivin, Mcl-1, XIAP or cIAP2).

Boris Kuvshinoff II, MD, MBA, has been named Chief Medical Quality Officer and interim Chief Medical Officer at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center. A surgical oncologist and longtime clinical and faculty leader at the comprehensive cancer center, he will provide day-to-day leadership and management of Roswell Park’s quality strategy, encompassing responsibilities in the areas of clinical performance improvement and patient safety, risk management, medical staff affairs and development of Institute policies.
