Meet the Team: Roswell Park Hematology Oncology Southtowns

Care Network Southtown location lobby

A new team of medical oncologists has joined Roswell Park Hematology Oncology Southtowns, bringing the best in early cancer diagnosis, patient-centered care, state-of-the-art treatment and pioneering clinical trials to the area. With the convenience of an on-site chemotherapy and infusion center, cancer patients throughout Aurora, Blasdell, East Aurora, Elma, Hamburg, Orchard Park, as well as hamlets and towns in the southern part of Erie County, can more easily access Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center’s vast range of expertise and comprehensive services closer to home, all in an established Southtowns practice that’s well known for its supportive and friendly environment.

World-class cancer care in your neighborhood

As part of Roswell Park’s Care Network, the Southtowns practice at 3041 Orchard Park Road is linked to Western New York’s only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center. Specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and blood malignancies, this location also treats patients with cancers of the skin, lung, chest, colon, prostate, kidney, bladder, breast and others, as well as a full range of hematologic care and treatment for blood and bone marrow disorders.

“Cancer patients are already dealing with so many challenges, and for many, having easy access to Roswell Park’s expertise closer to home reduces the stress caused by the burden of travel and parking in Buffalo,” says Rohit Gosain, MD, Medical Director of Hematology at the Southtowns practice. “Patients here have the best of both worlds, receiving the personal attention they’ve come to expect from our dedicated team and the close connection to experts and resources from Roswell Park.”

A community oncologist who shares insights, news and developments about cancer treatments on “Oncology Brothers,” a podcast he produces with his brother Rahul Gosain, MD, Dr. Gosain is enthusiastic about the expanding range of services that benefit patients at the Southtowns practice.

“This is a team of nurturing, patient-centered and caring medical professionals who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and blood disorders,” says Dr. Gosain. “Our group is dedicated to working closely with patients every step of the way, whether coordinating treatments, managing side effects or providing supportive healthcare services during and after treatment.”

To further enhance patient services, the team here now includes a dedicated pharmacist, urologist and breast cancer oncologist. “We have the benefit of working with board-certified specialists who are bringing our patients the newest therapies, treatment approaches, and clinical trials,” says Dr. Gosain. “Expanding our team means that patients wait less time to see doctors, receive results, begin treatment plans and schedule surgeries and therapies. It’s always our goal to act on cancer as quickly as possible so that we can initiate treatment and recovery can begin earlier.”

Strengthening community ties

Faster, easier access to specialized medical resources is key to improving outcomes, agrees Sunita Patruni, MD, who joined the Southtowns practice early in 2024. “One of the benefits of being closer to patients in these communities is we can make a real difference in the timing of cancer diagnoses,” says Dr. Patruni, whose fellowship research included a focus on health disparities in cancer treatment.

“Studies show that when patients have easier access to healthcare centers, they get screened earlier,” says Dr. Patruni. “We’re working to strengthen connections in the medical communities here, meeting with primary doctors to make them aware we can support them in providing their patients with convenient services including lab work, tests and screenings. Patients who may not have had screenings are now getting screened a little bit earlier. The sooner that we can identify a problem, the better the outcome will be.”

As a new physician to the practice, Dr. Patruni is enthusiastic about getting to know patients and families in the surrounding communities. “What's really special about this office is that we have the opportunity to get to know our patients at a personal level. We’ve been hearing great feedback and more people are finding us through word-of-mouth as patients share the news that this practice offers world-class care from Roswell Park in their own hometown.”

Roswell Park innovation

For board-certified medical oncologist and hematologist Ahmed Khattab, MD, access to a multidisciplinary team of specialists makes all the difference for patient outcomes in the Southtowns.

“Our patients benefit from Roswell Park's multidisciplinary approach,” says Dr. Khattab. “There are many advantages that come from treating patients holistically. Roswell Park really has this team approach where you feel comfortable seeing any type of patient who walks through the door. We have the expertise of tumor boards, surgeons, radiologists, geneticists and all the different specialists who come together to determine the best treatment plan for each patient. You're not really treated by one physician or hospital. You're treated by all of us."

Patients at Roswell Park Hematology Oncology Southtowns are now benefiting from early access to clinical trials and cutting-edge therapies such as CAR T-cell therapy, a newer type of immunotherapy that bioengineers a patient’s white cells (T cells) to produce receptor cells which are infused back into the patient to kill their cancer. “We're constantly looking for new treatments that improve the patient’s prognosis and come with fewer side effects,” says Dr. Khattab.

“The Southowns practice is a well-oiled machine, dedicated to superior patient care,” says Dr. Gossain. “As medical director, I’m excited about working with our new oncology team members, enhancing our services, and helping more patients access the full range of Roswell Park’s latest technology, innovative therapies and supportive services.

“It’s hard enough to have cancer,” he says. “We’re doing everything we can to make the experience easier, safer, less stressful and more supportive.”
