Message from the Chair

The Department of Pathology at Roswell Park is engaged in clinical, educational and research missions as part of a nationally ranked academic medical center focused on the treatment of cancer. Our department is focused on innovation with a focus on providing cutting edge solutions in all aspects of pathology. The department is organized by six divisions of anatomic pathology, hematopathology, lab medicine, molecular pathology, pathology outreach, and informatics, with each led by a Vice Chair. As a department of more than 200 faculty and staff we are one of the largest such groups in the country fully devoted to the treatment of cancer.

Our hematopathology division uniquely encompasses cytogenetics, flow cytometry, heme molecular, bone marrow laboratory, and a group of six board-approved hematopathologists to offer a seamless service that is state-of-the-art. Anatomic pathology provides subspecialty surgical pathology services for all disease types allowing for expertise in patient diagnosis. Laboratory medicine provides not only lab services but also has extensive patient contact with phlebotomy, apheresis, and the blood donor center. Molecular pathology, focused on the efficiency of utilization of next generation sequencing, provides rapid turn-around-time for complex laboratory developed tests. Informatics, the newest division of our department, is a very unique niche separate from information technology that allows us to be highly innovative. Pathology outreach is a developing service that is under development.

From a research basis we host multiple NCI-supported core facilities focused on histology services, immunohistochemistry, tissue procurement, flow cytometry, and digital pathology. Our faculty are involved in various translational research groups at Roswell Park and contribute to the overall research mission of the institute in many ways.

Education is at the forefront of our mission with fellowships in both surgical pathology and hematopathology that provide for the next generation of both community and academic pathologists.

For patients you can have confidence that you will receive the highest quality care concerning your diagnosis and other areas of testing that impact your treatment. Our pathologists have constant interactions with your treating doctor and every case is given an individualized approach.

Personally, I have been at Roswell Park for more than 15 years and for those looking for the next step in their career I often remind others that you are the limiting factor in success. As an institute totally focused on cancer since 1898, Roswell Park has removed the roadblocks to personal success and you will never regret making the choice to join our team.
