The Department of Nursing has achieved a prestigious designation: Magnet Recognition for Nursing Excellence from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
Magnet designation is a results-driven recognition that highlights the role nurses play as part of an interprofessional team focused on improving patient outcomes. Research shows that Magnet-recognized organizations demonstrate better patient outcomes and higher patient satisfaction.
The nurses at Roswell Park stand out in many ways, including out-performing our peer group on many elements of the Nursing Sensitive Indicators and patient satisfaction scores. Patients under our care leave with fewer injuries and infections in comparison to other specialty, Magnet and teaching organizations. When we do better, our patients win. They receive the optimal patient care they deserve.
Pillars of Nursing Excellence
Transformational leadership
Roswell Park provides various opportunities for our nursing staff to develop transformational leadership skills to meet the demands of the future, encourage personal development and influence the culture of the organization.
Excellence in action
Structural empowerment
Structural empowerment is a concept where the organization has structures to empower nurses to collaborate professionally with disciplines outside of nursing and take part in shared professional governance at all levels. The organization values education, and knowledge building and knowledge sharing are prioritized to improve patient and staff outcomes.
Excellence in action
New knowledge, innovations and improvements
Continuously striving to improve patient care and safety is supported through the application of current evidence-based practice guidelines and facilitating research to build that body of evidence. Roswell Park is committed to providing an environment where evidence-based practice and research flourish in the Department of Nursing.
Excellence in action
Exemplary professional practice
Roswell Park nurses use best practices, communicate effectively and are committed to quality care.
Excellence in action
Better than the national benchmarks
Our Magnet document received very high marks, garnering nine specific exemplars. Most notable was our exceptionally low nurse turnover rate. While the criteria is to have a turnover rate of less than 10%, our rate was much lower — less than 1%!
Roswell Park rated highly for ethics, with nurses going above and beyond to address ethical issues related to clinical practice. We also work preemptively to assess patients with complex care, conflicts of care and moral distress, before the issues detract from the care provided.
We also outperformed the national benchmark for the majority of eight quarters on 100% of the inpatient units for the following:
- Patient Education
- Courtesy and respect
- Care coordination
- Careful listening
- Surgical errors
- Patient burns
- Device-related HAPI (hospital-acquired pressure injuries)
ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® is the highest credential a healthcare organization can achieve. It acknowledges the invaluable contributions of nurses in all healthcare settings and among all populations around the world.
Magnet designation is an indication to patients and the public that these organizations have met the most stringent, evidence-based standards of nursing excellence in patient care delivery.
