BUFFALO, N.Y. — Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center’s President and CEO, Candace S. Johnson, PhD, has been named to a new list of the most powerful female leaders in New York. City & State, a media company covering government and politics in New York, included Dr. Johnson on its New York Women Power 100 list, which honors the 100 most influential women in government, public affairs, business, culture and social services.

Also named to this new list of distinguished New Yorkers is Leecia Eve, JD, who was recently appointed to the Roswell Park Board of Directors by Gov. Andrew Cuomo. City & State ranked Eve as 40th on its list of powerful women and Dr. Johnson as 41st.

The women on the Power 100 list are “the real movers and shakers” in leadership roles throughout the state.

Dr. Johnson became the first woman ever to serve as chief executive of Roswell Park in 2015. She joined the cancer center in February 2002 from the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute/ University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and is currently President & CEO, Wallace Family Chair in Translational Research and Professor of Oncology at Roswell Park. “As a partner to the first biotech venture between the United States and Cuba,” City & State notes, “Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in Buffalo has elevated its profile from a Western New York institution to a national one.”

“Roswell Park is thriving under Dr. Johnson’s leadership,” says Michael Joseph, Chair of the Roswell Park Board of Directors.

A Buffalo native, Eve is Vice President of State Government Affairs for New York, New Jersey and Connecticut with Verizon Communications Inc. Her past experience includes roles as New York’s Deputy Secretary for Economic Development, Senior Vice President and General Counsel to Empire State Development, and a senior counsel and legislative adviser to then-U.S. Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton and Joseph Biden. A 1990 graduate of Harvard Law School and the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Eve also spent five years in private practice with Hodgson Russ LLP, where she became the first African-American general equity partner in the law firm’s history.

“Leecia’s background in public service and her private-sector expertise will be an invaluable asset to Roswell Park,” says Joseph. “She brings both deep experience and rich insights that will help us to serve our community as fully and effectively as possible.”

The 100 women on City & State’s list will be honored at a breakfast tomorrow at The New York Academy of Sciences. See the full Women Power 100 list at https://www.cityandstateny.com/articles/power-list-gallery/power-list/women-power-100-2018.html.
