More than 50 Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) employees and supporters took part in a Goin’ Bald for Bucks event today by shaving their heads or cutting their hair to raise funds and show their support for cancer patients.

Donations have recently funded the nine most promising preliminary research projects at Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI). Following a peer-reviewed competition, nine clinicians and researchers have received a total of $718,506 from the Roswell Park Alliance Foundation, the not-for-profit that raises funds and manages all donations made to RPCI.

College students say they would follow their doctor’s recommendations concerning the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, a currently underutilized opportunity for cancer prevention.

The Lung Cancer Screening Program at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, already a unique asset regionally, has earned the commendation of a major national advocacy group. Lung Cancer Alliance has named Roswell Park a Screening Center of Excellence in recognition of the comprehensive cancer center’s ongoing commitment to responsible lung cancer screening within an experienced and multidisciplinary clinical setting.

After a national search involving the review of many applications and numerous interviews and discussions with qualified candidates, the Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center Board of Directors has named Candace S. Johnson, PhD, as the Institute’s 15th President and CEO. Dr. Johnson will also be the first female leader for this 117-year-old comprehensive cancer center.

Researchers have uncovered new information that may begin to explain why many African-American women are more likely to be diagnosed with aggressive, often deadly forms of breast cancer, which strengthens the evidence that increased dietary folate intake may prove to be an effective strategy for reducing risk for the disease in African-American women.
