Dr. Haring, Josie Raphaelito, MPH (Navajo), and Corinne Abrams, MPH (Tuscarora), are lead investigators on a project funded by the National Institutes of Health to create Indigenized colorectal materials specifically for two-spirit and Native LGBTQ+ individuals.

Virtual roundtables conducted with Indigenous partners and allies in New York City highlighted several ways to improve outreach, including:  adapting community-based messaging and materials to be more inclusive, including community language versus medical terminology in outreach materials, incorporating more of a community approach to outreach versus a medical or clinic approach in marketing and outreach, and including information on the continuum of care and “next steps” in care. Lastly, building trust between the community and the medical field or service provider were essential elements as well.
