2022 Mohawk Youth Health Ambassadors

The Department of Indigenous Cancer Health has a four-year partnership with the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe (SRMT) to co-develop and implement programming to support science-based learning and educational experiences among Mohawk high school and college students.

At the end of the school year in May, our teams wrapped up the Mohawk Youth Health Ambassador afterschool program. We worked with students from both Massena and Salmon River High Schools to introduce them to health sciences, Indigenous researchers, and opportunities to further explore cancer health throughout their educational journeys. Their afterschool program culminated in a virtual presentation by the students to the Department of Indigenous Cancer Health and SRMT partners to showcase their afterschool experience and brief literature review project.

Our teams also welcomed students to the summer research internship program, which included three Mohawk college students for a ten-week experience at Roswell Park, and 15 Mohawk high school students who participated in a three-week remote learning experience and a three-day visit to Roswell Park. Students were mentored throughout the summer and the program concluded with various in-person and virtual presentations of their summer research.
