Patient navigator community outreach

Representatives from the Center for Indigenous Cancer Research have been out in the community more, offering classes like this nutrition workshop throughout Western New York.

With more organizations creating more in-person events and gatherings, our Indigenous Patient Navigators have been busy over the past months gearing up for more community outreach. You may have seen some familiar navigator faces at the Prostate Cancer Early Detection Event that was put on by Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Buffalo Sabres, as well as 5ks and a smoke dance contest in our local Indigenous communities across Western New York.

We have been working very closely with Indian Health Service (IHS) Lockport Service Unit for outreach and education events to promote healthy eating and cancer screening education. Together we planned an Indigenous Farmers Market Day and a nutrition class where participants learned healthy recipes to cook at home. A Back to School Bash is the next collaborative outreach event we will be putting on with IHS Lockport and community partners.

With more powwows and field days happening this summer, you are sure to see our navigators around.
