BUFFALO, N.Y. — The latest resources from Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center related to the COVID-19 pandemic offer information for patients, medical professionals and the general public.
Cancer “doesn’t go away in a pandemic”: Surgery Update
We continue to follow guidance from state and local officials as it relates to non-urgent surgeries and procedures. But as Dr. John Kane III, Chair of Surgical Oncology, notes on Roswell Park’s Cancer Talk blog, “Very few of our cancer cases are considered elective.” Roswell Park teams continue to perform all essential surgeries and procedures and schedule surgeries that were previously postponed. “And we have the necessary precautions in place to do it safely,” said Dr. Kane. Once cleared to offer non-urgent surgeries and procedures, the focus will be on surveillance for high-risk cancers, plus treatment of slow-growing and pre-cancerous lesions.
