Roswell Park and Buffalo Sabres to Host Free Skin Cancer Screening Event at KeyBank Center

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Buffalo Sabres are teaming up to offer FREE skin cancer screening examinations and education on Thursday, May 11 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at KeyBank Center. Preregistration is required for a skin examination but all are invited to take part in the informational program. Free parking is available at the KeyBank Center ramp.

“Roswell Park is proud to join with the Buffalo Sabres to offer this valuable prevention and early detection event,” says Ilene Rothman, MD, Interim Chair and Associate Professor of Oncology in the Department of Dermatology at Roswell Park. “Each year in the U.S., nearly 5 million people are treated for all skin cancers combined. We want to make people aware of the early signs and symptoms of skin cancer as well as what they can do to prevent skin cancer. For most types of skin cancers, cure is highly likely if they are detected early and treated promptly.”

During the screening examination, which takes approximately 10 minutes, a physician, physician assistant or nurse practitioner from Roswell Park’s Department of Dermatology will inspect the skin for suspicious moles, growths or sores and provide education on skin self-examination and early skin cancer detection and treatment.

Screening participants will have the opportunity to meet Sabres alumni and visit the locker room. The public is also invited to hear short lectures by the dermatologists, watch educational videos, and take home written educational material as well as sunscreen samples. Preregistration is required to be screened. Participants are eligible for the free skin cancer screening if they have artificially tanned, worked outside, have a suspicious mole or spot or have had a severe blistering sunburn.
