Dr. Martin Mahoney Named Vice Chair of American Cancer Society's Primary Care Advisory Committee

BUFFALO, NY — Martin C. Mahoney, MD, PhD, an Associate Professor in the Departments of Health Behavior and Medicine at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center (Roswell Park), has been appointed Vice Chair of the American Cancer Society (ACS) Primary Care Advisory Committee.

This national committee is charged with advising and assisting the ACS on efforts to include more primary care physicians in activities at all levels of the Society; establishing an ongoing, meaningful relationship with primary care organizations; and guiding ACS efforts to promote primary-care-based preventive, early detection and survivorship services.

Dr. Mahoney is a member of the ACS Board of Advisors, Western New York Region, which is part of the ACS New York/New Jersey Division, and serves as the Society’s medical spokesman in Western New York. He formerly served on the ACS New York/New Jersey Division Board of Directors. In addition, Dr. Mahoney serves as principal investigator for the ACS-supported Physician Training Award in Preventive Medicine program, which provides specialized training in cancer prevention and control in collaboration with the University at Buffalo’s General Preventive Medicine Residency Program.

Dr. Mahoney, who is board-certified in Family Medicine, joined Roswell Park’s staff in 1998 as Director of the Cancer Prevention & Detection and Employee Health clinics and Research Scientist in the Department of Cancer Prevention, Epidemiology & Biostatistics. He earned his doctoral degree in Epidemiology from the Roswell Park Graduate Division of the University at Buffalo (UB) in 1987, and his medical degree from the UB School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences in 1995. He completed residency training in Family Medicine at the UB Medical & Dental Consortium in 1998. His research focuses primarily on early detection of lung cancer, smoking cessation and human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines.
