Our world-class team
Roswell Park is a dedicated cancer center, with the experience and expertise to evaluate, diagnose and treat thyroid and parathyroid tumors every single day. Our comprehensive thyroid and parathyroid cancer team is headed by Wesley Hicks Jr., MD, DDS, FACS, Chair of Head & Neck/Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery.
- Fast, early, accurate detection and diagnosis. It can be difficult to distinguish between certain kinds of thyroid tumors, especially rare types. Our pathologists at Roswell Park have the expertise and experience in evaluating thyroid cancer and thyroid disease, and will provide a timely, accurate diagnosis to determine the best individualized approach to your treatment.
- We help set the national standards. Dominick Lamonica, MD, Director of Nuclear Medicine at Roswell Park, is among the experts who serve on the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) panel that writes the national guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid cancer.
Our comprehensive cancer care
- The assurance of multidisciplinary care. At Roswell Park, you’ll receive care from a team of specialists from different fields—including surgery, nuclear medicine, radiation medicine, medical oncology, and genetic counseling—all working together to develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs and preferences.
- Young Adult Cancer program. Thyroid cancer is one of the most common cancers found in young adults. Patients in their 20s and 30s have unique challenges and need specialized care and support. Our program integrates services such as fertility preservation, mental health counseling, financial counseling, sexual health, social support, networking and more, into the care plan for young adults.
- Genetic screening and counseling. Some thyroid cancers and parathyroid tumors are caused by an inherited genetic mutation (abnormality) in a specific gene. If you have a family history of thyroid cancer or parathyroid tumors, our Genetics team will help you make an informed decision about whether you and/or your children should undergo testing for any inherited gene mutations that may affect your risk of developing thyroid disease or thyroid cancer.
Support for the whole person
- Support services. We offer a broad range of services to treat the whole person, not just their cancer, such as nutrition services, physical therapy, tobacco cessation, acupuncture, spiritual care, counseling, music, art and pet therapy, and more.
- Survivorship Center, specifically for patients who have completed active treatment, provides medical and supportive services to meet the unique needs of cancer survivors as they face forward and aim for a higher level of life-long wellness.
