Two experts from Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center are delivering presentations this week at an international conference highlighting research aimed at extending and improving the lives of patients with blood-related cancers. Nataliya Buxbaum, MD, from the Department of Pediatric Oncology and Marco Davila, MD, PhD, Vice Chair for Cellular Therapies and Senior Vice President and Associate Director for Translational Research, were invited to highlight their work in podium talks at the 2023 Tandem Transplantation & Cellular Therapy Meetings of the American Society for Transplantation and Cellular Therapy (ASTCT) and Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR) this week in Orlando, Florida.

Investigators from Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center are among the experts whose work will be highlighted February 15-19 at the 2023 Tandem Transplantation & Cellular Therapy Meetings of the American Society for Transplantation and Cellular Therapy (ASTCT) and Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR) in Orlando, Florida. The combined annual meetings promote the exchange of information about the latest discoveries in hematopoietic cell transplantation and cellular therapy for blood-related cancers, with the aim of extending patient survival and improving quality of life.

Research at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center shows that putting a three-day limit on opioid prescriptions to treat surgical pain after hospital discharge reduces the number of patients who become chronic opioid users without compromising pain relief or recovery. It also reduces the amount of opioids circulating in the community — a grave concern, given that opioids are implicated in 130 overdose deaths in the U.S. every day.

This year’s list includes 142 physicians across 32 specialties, which is compiled thorough peer surveys of Western New York doctors.

A brain cancer vaccine developed at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center appears to be safe and significantly extends survival in newly diagnosed glioblastoma patients, according to a Phase 2A single-arm clinical trial. The study, “Phase 2A Study of SurVaxM Plus Adjuvant Temozolomide for Newly Diagnosed Glioblastoma,” appears this week in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. Manmeet Ahluwalia, MD, MBA, Fernandez Family Foundation Endowed Chair in Cancer Research, Chief of Medical Oncology, Deputy Director and Chief Scientific Officer of Miami Cancer Institute, served as overall Principal Investigator.

Following an international search, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center has promoted and appointed Joyce Ohm, PhD, as Chair of Cancer Genetics and Genomics as well as the John & Santa Palisano Endowed Chair of Cancer Genetics. She previously served as interim chair of the department.
