Your voice is important and can help others!

Would you like to help shape organizational initiatives and research policies that may impact your community? Roswell Park leadership is looking for people just like you!

Roswell Park leadership is currently recruiting members of the Buffalo area to serve on our Institutional Review Board and Institutional Biosafety Committee. It’s an opportunity to raise your voice and share your experience on two of our most important collaborations. The goal is to ensure the patients, families and caregivers we serve are heard, respected and valued.

The Institutional Review Board (IRB) is made up of physicians, scientists and community members (like you!) dedicated to advancing responsible and ethical research practices and to ensuring the rights, dignity and welfare of human subjects are protected.

IRB responsibilities and requirements

As an IRB community member, your primary focus will be to represent the perspective of research participants. You will evaluate documents that include a consent form and other patient-facing materials to make sure the language is clear and any instructions are understandable.

“Lay” members must not be affiliated with Roswell Park: a scientific background is not necessary, but you must have computer access that includes internet and email. We will provide training on the use of our “Click IRB” system.

You will usually spend between 5 and 10 hours each month as an IRB community member. This includes reviewing documents and attending the monthly online meeting via Microsoft Teams, which usually lasts between one and three hours.

IRB meetings are convened on the first Thursday of the month at 1 p.m.

The Institute Biosafety Committee (IBC) is made up of representatives from the scientific community, Radiation Safety, Environmental Safety, Employee Health Services, Comparative Oncology Shared Resources and community members (like you!) who represent the views of the general public.

As an IBC community member, you will provide a non-scientific perspective on research review and represent the interests of the communities surrounding Roswell Park. Your focus is on ensuring that the environment and public health and safety are considered in biosafety decisions.

IBC responsibilities and requirements

Candidates to become IBC community members must not be affiliated with Roswell Park and must live within 50 miles of a Roswell Park location. A scientific background is not necessary, but you must have computer access that includes internet and email.

You will usually spend between two and three hours each month as an IBC community member. This includes reviewing documents and attending the monthly meeting via Microsoft Teams, which usually lasts between one and two hours. IBC meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the month at 1 p.m.

Please consider sharing your point of view and experience as a Roswell Park community board member.
