As we head into another flu season, it’s time to take steps to protect yourself from influenza (flu), as well as respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and COVID-19. The high-risk period for these viral respiratory illnesses runs from November 1 to March 31.
These three illnesses — influenza, RSV and COVID-19 — can be particularly dangerous to people with cancer. Severe cases can lead to increased rates of hospitalization, complications which can result in delays in your cancer treatment, and even death.
We have vaccines available that can significantly reduce the risk of having a severe case and complications.
Symptoms of all three illnesses can be similar, with general respiratory symptoms like runny or stuffy nose, cough, sore throat, and systemic symptoms such as fever, chills and body aches. People ages 60 and older are at greater risk for more severe infection that requires hospitalization from RSV. People can be contagious even before they start showing symptoms.
Please talk to your Roswell Park physician if you have any questions or concerns. Patients should contact their primary care provider or local commercial pharmacy for vaccine availability and schedule an appointment. Roswell Park also encourages those who live with you to get a flu shot each year. This can reduce their chance of getting influenza and infecting you.
