Roswell Park in the Community
Explore the ways Roswell Park is making a difference in Western NY with outreach and community partnerships to educate, inform and reduce the cancer burden in our neighborhoods.
Year in review

June
Ready for a busy summer? Our outreach teams are! Join us at the Pride and Juneteenth parades and so much more!
Showing our Pride
Roswell Park raised the Pride flag in Kaminski Park on a beautiful afternoon and are getting ready to participate in this year’s Pride parade on Elmwood Avenue! Look for us and be sure to say hello! Special thanks to the Buffalo Gay Men's Chorus and Nickel City Treblemakers for lending their voices.
Celebrating Juneteenth
On Saturday, June 13, Roswell Park is proud to be joining Buffalo’s Juneteenth parade, one of the largest in the nation, followed by participation all weekend in the 50th annual Juneteenth festival at Martin Luther King Jr. Park. Look for our outreach teams for important health information!
Remembering our lost neighbors
On May 14, several of our employees volunteered their time assembling art kits for community organizations and sorting and organizing the community food pantry, honoring the lives of the 10 people killed at the Tops on Jefferson Avenue. May their memories never fade.
It's almost Ride time!
June is here and that means it's time to pump up your tires and get your gears in motion for the Ride for Roswell! There’s still plenty of room for you to join, whether you prefer a leisurely 4 miles or an adventurous 100 miles, raising important funds for cancer research along the way.
Supporting our firefighters
Dr. Mary Reid, Chief of Cancer Screening and Survivorship, spoke with Mayor Sean Ryan as the city announced $1 million in funding for new turnout gear for Buffalo firefighters, an important investment in protecting them from breathing in harmful chemicals released during fires.
Find EDDY this summer
The summer months don't mean a vacation for our cancer screening teams! Both of our mobile cancer screening units will be out and about in the community and appearing at events throughout the summer. Find out if you're eligible for a low-dose CT for lung, prostate or breast cancer and find where EDDY will be parked near you.

National recognition for lung cancer work
Congratulations to Dr. Elizabeth Bouchard and her team for being recognized by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network for their work on lung cancer education and screening! They were recognized for a new social network-based intervention to help increase access to, and reduce disparities in, lung cancer screening through the ICAN program.
Ride season is here!
The grass is growing, trees and flowers are blooming - it's springtime and that means the Ride for Roswell is just around the corner! Have you signed up yet? Join us June 27 and enjoy one of nine routes, ranging from 4 to 100 miles, to help us work together for a world without cancer.
Celebrating Roswell Park's impact on cancer prevention
Dr. Candice Johnson, Roswell Park's President and CEO, was joined by representatives of our outreach teams in Washington, DC, as she accepted the Carolyn "Bo" Aldigé Visionary Award from the Prevent Cancer Foundation's Congressional Families Program. The award honors leaders and organizations dedicated to, and making a significant impact on, cancer prevention, screening and early detection.
Building bridges
The International Institute of Buffalo recently welcomed Roswell Park’s Community Alliance to Reach, Empower and Sustain (CARES) initiative for a health fair with information about cancer risk, awareness and the importance of screening. Some attendees were referred to our mobile cancer screening units for important early detection tests.
Cancer screening in the community
Need to be screened for prostate, breast or lung cancer but get nervous going to a hospital? EDDY – Early Detection Driven to You – is here to help! Check out our calendar to see where our two EDDY mobile screening units will be in the community this month.
A place to gather
Roswell Park’s Community Outreach and Engagement Center at 907 Michigan was created to be a place where people can come together to learn about cancer care, but it’s more than that! It’s a space that can be used by community organizations for meetings and workshops. We host so many events each month and we’d like to welcome you!
April
April
A special event for our young adult patients; celebrating two of our own and a big milestone for mobile cancer screening. Read all about it!
Calling all young adult cancer patients and survivors
Navigating cancer at any age is difficult; an unexpected diagnosis in the middle of high school, or as you’re starting your career or a family, can make things harder. Join the Roswell Park Young Adult program for its annual Cancerchella event on May 8-9, bringing together patients, survivors and their support networks for a chance to connect, learn and be among those who understand these special challenges.
A big milestone for EDDY
What started as a simple but challenging concept – making lung cancer screening less daunting and more accessible – has turned into a big success! Our mobile lung cancer screening unit, EDDY (Early Detective Driven to You) has officially provided more than 3,000 people with low-dose CT scans for lung cancer.
Congratulations are in order!
Three cheers to Nikia Clark Robinson and Dr. Julia Devonish for their recognition among this year’s honorees at the 16th Annual Women Who Walk in the Footsteps of Greatness Gala! We’re so proud of them and their hard work in cancer care, outreach, education and screening!
Ride season is here
It might not fully feel like spring yet but we’re looking ahead to summer and the 31st annual Ride for Roswell! Join us June 27 and enjoy one of nine routes, ranging from 4 to 100 miles, to help us work together for a world without cancer.
Shining a light on women’s health
In honor of Women’s Health Month, Roswell Park hosted a Women’s Cancer Wellness Summit at the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens, bringing together experts in cancer care, survivorship and general wellness to discuss ways to live a resilient, vibrant life. Thanks to all those who attended!
Help your neighbors
We always need more volunteers! Whether you have a few hours to spend helping patients find their way to appointments, or you can translate information in Spanish or other languages, we need your help! Bring your friends and volunteer together!

March
Exciting news from our Community Outreach and Engagement Team; an educational opportunity for women cancer survivors; supporting teachers and more! We’re getting ready for a busy spring ahead.
We're growing!
Thanks to the generosity of State Senator April Baskin and Assembly Majority Leader Crystal Peoples-Stokes, we’ll be putting out the construction cones in September for a new $4 million expansion of our Community Outreach and Engagement Center! We’re so excited for the incredible opportunity to continue working with our community.
Reconnecting with our partners
It’s always nice to get together with our partners! We were pleased with a great turnout to our second annual partner reception in late February, providing a reconnect, reflect on our work together and look ahead to the future. Thanks to Mayor Sean Ryan and Roswell Park CEO and President Candice Johnson for joining the party!
Bringing women together for a day of wellness
Join our experts on March 21 for a day focused on wellness throughout the cancer journey, from screening and diagnosis to survivorship. Wellness isn’t limited to a spa day – it’s about taking care of your whole self, something that’s even more important as a survivor.
Supporting teachers
Teachers are vitally important in our community. Through our CARES program, a group of Roswell Park employees spent some volunteering at The Teacher’s Desk, packing up classroom supplies to be donated to classrooms in Western New York. It’s one of many ways we enjoy giving back to those who give us so much.
A space for community
Since opening its doors, the center has welcomed more than 16,000 community members and hosted over 800 events, of which approximately 500 were led directly by community partners. Your event could be next!
Ready to get involved?
We always need more volunteers! Whether you have a few hours to spend helping patients find their way to appointments, or you can translate information in Spanish or other languages, we need your help! Bring your friends and volunteer together!
February 2026
February
Highlighting research, spinning for cures, a double EDDY sighting and more!
Research Matters
Every year, Roswell Park uses the big game at the end of the NFL season to highlight our work and our community. This year, we’re turning the spotlight on our researchers. Research is where every new treatment, every new innovation, begins.
Ready to ride?
It’s the coolest way to raise money to support Roswell Park! Grab some friends and sign up for the sixth annual IceCycle, the opportunity to take spin classes at RiverWorks on March 6 and 7. Spots are limited and there are some fun themed classes to consider!
Seeing double
For the first time both of our mobile cancer screening units will be in the same place at the same time! Schedule your appointment or take a tour on Tuesday and Wednesday, February 10 and 11, at Cavalry Baptist Church on Genesee Street. Lung, prostate and breast cancer screenings will be available both days.
When the doctor becomes the patient
Laura Mango, MD, works with cancer patients daily. The last thing she expected was to become a patient herself. Hear her story on Smarter than Cancer, Roswell Park's new podcast.

Another successful Tree of Hope
Under clear, starry skies, hundreds of people gathered in Kaminski Park on December 12 for our annual Tree of Hope celebration. It was a festive night of lights and fun!

Roswell Park wants you to get screened! With two mobile cancer screening units – one for lung cancer, the other for breast and prostate cancers – we’re bringing detection into the community. See where you can find EDDY this month!
