Vice President for Quality Initiatives
Chief Quality Officer

Biography

I joined the Roswell Park Cancer Institute as Vice President for Quality Initiatives and Chief Quality Officer in January 2026. I lead a very talented team of quality and safety experts in the Department of Quality and Patient Safety. Our goal is to offer our expertise to interpret, analyze, inform, and provide guidance for our colleagues with a collaborative, respectful, and constructive approach to improve patient outcomes throughout Roswell Park. I was appointed as an Adjunct Professor in Gynecologic Oncology in 2025 and dedicate time to education of our gynecologic oncology fellows on a regular basis.

My experience in quality assessment and improvement, leadership roles, change management, teaching, and research is extensive through the course of 34 years at the University of Michigan as a tenured professor and board-certified gynecologic oncologist. I performed over 8,000 pelvic surgeries and provided tens of thousands chemotherapy cycles for patients with gynecologic cancers.

Clinical: I served as the Chief of the Gynecologic Oncology Division at the University of Michigan for 23 years during which the program expanded from 3 to 8 faculty members and service was expanded from one to three hospitals. Our department rose steadily in the US News and World Report rankings for clinical excellence, reaching number 2 in the United States in 2019 under my direction of the oncology component. In 2015 I was recognized as the Clinician of the Year out of over 2,000 faculty physicians for the University of Michigan Health Care system based on clinical and teaching excellence as well as significance of research contributions to the development of minimally invasive surgical approaches for gynecologic cancers.

Teaching: I served as the program director for the University of Michigan gynecologic oncology fellowship program for 22 years and I served as core teaching faculty for the Ob/Gyn residency for 30 years. I formally mentored 28 fellows and 6 residents, and they have gone on to become department chairs, cancer center directors, fellowship directors, educators, researchers and outstanding clinicians. Throughout my career I was awarded 5 national teaching awards and 7 institutional teaching awards, including the University of Michigan (4 awards), St. Joseph Mercy Hospital (Ann Arbor, 1 award), Oakwood Hospital (Dearborn, 1 award), and most recently the Guiding Star in Gynecologic Oncology Education Award at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in July 2025.

Quality Assurance and Improvement: I chaired the subspecialty quality assurance program in gynecologic oncology for 27 years and was co-lead on the Enhanced Recovery after Surgery program that lead to dramatically shortened length of stay and more than $1,000 cost reduction per surgical procedure through prospective quality and value efforts. I also served on the institutional peer review and risk management committees for 13 years. Our team developed a statewide consortium of gynecologic oncologists to work with insurers prospectively in order to develop metrics and programs to optimize treatment value. At the national level I served on the cervix and uterine guidelines committees with the National Comprehensive Cancer Network for 23 years and I served on the Society for Gynecologic Oncology Government Relations committee for four years, which included federal lobbying to support clinical and research funding for our specialty.

Research: I have received 29 grants as principal investigator or co-investigator over the course of my career, which focused on clinical trials to improve cancer outcomes and to support translational research. I have authored and coauthored 106 peer-reviewed publications and 9 peer-reviewed book chapters. In addition, I served on Protocol Review Committees in two hospitals for a total of 14 years. I understand and support the research mission that is critical to improving cancer outcomes and recognize the link between research and high-quality clinical care.
