Roswell Park, the world’s oldest cancer center established in 1898, is known for numerous basic science and translational discoveries in oncology. As an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, we run multidisciplinary research combining, under the umbrella of our Cancer Center Support Grant, multiple programs aimed at understanding, preventing and curing cancer. Our state-of-the-art research infrastructure enables all aspects of modern biomedical research – from discovery work towards clinical validation – and provides a highly stimulating academic and clinical environment.
Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center was founded in 1898 as the world’s first cancer research center. From our early breakthroughs in chemotherapy to the discovery of the PSA biomarker, Roswell Park has continually shaped the way cancer is diagnosed, treated, and prevented worldwide.

At Roswell Park, physicians practice in a high-volume, tertiary referral center that draws patients from across New York State, the Northeast, and beyond. Our reputation as the region’s only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center makes us the trusted destination for the most complex cancer cases.
- Referral Base. A strong and growing Roswell Park Care Network ensures steady referral volume and collaboration with community physicians.
- Advanced technologies. Access cutting-edge tools such as robotic surgery platforms, image-guided radiation therapy, CAR T-cell therapy, cellular and gene therapies, advanced imaging modalities, and minimally invasive surgical techniques.
- Multidisciplinary model. Physicians are supported by expert nurse practitioners, physician assistants, oncology nurses, pharmacists, dietitians, social workers, and patient navigators — ensuring every patient benefits from a team-based approach.

- Core facilities. Specialized labs in genomics, proteomics, flow cytometry, investigational drug support, pathology, gene targeting, and translational imaging.
- Biobank. One of the nation’s most comprehensive cancer biorepositories, supporting translational and population science research.
- Grants & funding support. A dedicated grants office provides assistance with NIH, DOD, and foundation proposals, with mentoring for early-career investigators.
- Clinical trial ecosystem. More than 400 active clinical trials with streamlined enrollment support, regulatory assistance, and data management.

Physicians at Roswell Park have a strong academic presence through our partnership with the University at Buffalo and the University of Rochester.

Compensation & Benefits
At Roswell Park, we recognize that exceptional physicians deserve an environment where their expertise is valued and supported. Our compensation and benefits package is designed to be competitive, comprehensive, and aligned with both academic medicine and community practice models.
- Competitive salary structure. Physicians are compensated through a salaried model with opportunities for incentives for those out-performing standards.
- Transparency. Salary bands are structured to reflect national benchmarks and ensure fairness across specialties and career stages.
- Incentives for innovation. Opportunities for additional compensation linked to research funding, clinical trial leadership and program development.
- Health Insurance. We offer a range of comprehensive health insurance plans to care for all your health needs, including medical and preventive care, hospitalization, mental health care, drug coverage and more, with modest pre-tax employee contribution for individual, family or domestic partner coverage. (These are NOT high-deductible plans.) We offer plans through the Empire Plan, Highmark BCBS, and Independent Health, along with other plans for those who live outside of the 8 counties of WNY.
- Dental and vision coverage. At NO cost. Plans provide for dental expenses, eye exams, and contacts / eyeglasses. Providers will vary depending on your union.
- Retirement plans. Physicians are to choose between the SUNY Optional Retirement Plan (401a) a defined contribution program and the New York State Employees’ Retirement System, a defined benefit program. In addition, physicians may defer additional income into up to two supplemental retirement plans — 403(b) and 457(b) — each up to the IRS annual limit.
- Retiree health insurance. Physicians who have served 10 years of service under Roswell Park’s health insurance program and are age 55 or older may qualify for retiree health coverage. This includes the same insurance benefits as active employees, with the option to use accrued sick time to offset premium costs.
- Medical malpractice coverage. Full legal defense and liability protection are provided to physicians at no cost for work performed at Roswell Park.
- Long-term disability insurance. Physicians working at least 24 hours per week receive long-term disability coverage equal to 60% of their salary (up to $20,000/month). This policy includes “own occupation” protection, ensuring coverage if a disability prevents you from performing your specific role.
- Relocation support. Comprehensive relocation packages are available to assist physicians and their families who move to the Buffalo-Niagara region from more than 35 miles away.
- Paid time off. Generous vacation, sick leave, personal days, and 13 observed holidays per year. Additional leave is available for military service, jury duty, medical screenings, and professional development.
- Education and tuition support. While tuition reimbursement and loan repayment programs are not broadly offered, in select cases — typically for senior physicians advancing into leadership roles — tuition reimbursement for advanced degrees (e.g., MBA) may be approved at the discretion of the CEO.
- Protected time. Physicians with research or teaching commitments may be eligible for protected time to pursue academic interests without sacrificing clinical productivity.
- Mentorship and growth. Structured mentorship programs and promotion pathways through our academic affiliation with the University at Buffalo.
