Roswell Park Recognized for Quality in Bone Marrow Transplant Care

BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York today has redesignated Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center as a Blue Distinction Center® for delivering quality transplant care as part of the Blue Distinction Centers for Specialty Care® program. Approximately 100 Blue Distinction Centers for Transplants have been designated in the United States, with only four located in New York State.

Cancer Researchers Identify New Metastasis-Suppressor Gene

Among patients with deadly cancers, more than 90 percent die because of metastatic spread of their disease. Looking to target a key pathway in order to interfere with the processes that lead to tumor spread, a research team led by Irwin H. Gelman, Ph.D., of Roswell Park Cancer Institute has identified a new suppressor of cancer metastasis that may point the way toward development of more effective treatments for prostate cancers and other malignant solid tumors.

Seeking Interviewers for Public Health Program at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center

Students, seniors and others seeking part-time work should consider a position as a survey interviewer about public health issues at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. The RPCI Department of Health Behavior is seeking 30 employees to conduct telephone interviews that will survey public opinions about trends in tobacco use, knowledge, attitudes and behaviors. The right candidates will play a role in answering scientific questions about tobacco, cancer and other health-care issues.

Cognitive Assessment Provides Window into Proficiency Level of Robot-Assisted Surgeons

What clues might brain metrics hold about the skill levels of surgeons who perform robot-assisted surgeries? Looking for better ways to assess the proficiency of surgeons performing these complex procedures, researchers at Roswell Park Cancer Institute and the University at Buffalo determined whether cognitive assessment can effectively measure the expertise of robotic surgeons with varying levels of experience.

It's a Girl! Buffalo Museum of Science, Roswell Park Reveal Results from CT Scan of South American Mummy

The results of the “virtual autopsy” performed on a South American mummy from the collection of the Buffalo Museum of Science (BMS) are in, providing new insights into the life of the infant mummy. As part of the groundbreaking Mummies of the World exhibition, which premiered in Buffalo on April 12, Dr. Peter Loud of Roswell Park Cancer Institute and Dr. Heather Gill-Frerking of American Exhibitions, Inc., along with a team of RPCI radiologists performed a noninvasive 3D computed tomography scan of the mummy on April 7.
