Biography
My journey in the medical field began with a solid educational foundation, starting with a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from the State University of New York at Albany. I furthered my academic pursuits at Albany Medical College and the State University of New York at Albany. I completed graduate coursework in various advanced topics, including Growth Factors and Oncogenes, Developmental Genetics, Immunology, and Molecular Biology.
In May 1995, I proudly graduated with a Doctor of Medicine degree from the esteemed University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Piscataway, New Jersey. This marked the beginning of an intensive period of professional training, which included a Residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, followed by a Fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at the renowned Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and a Fellowship in Medical Oncology at the prestigious Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center of New York Presbyterian Hospital.
Over the years, I have amassed significant professional experience. Since July 2023, I have been the Chief of Head & Neck Medicine and General Medical Oncology at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in Buffalo, NY. Additionally, I am an Associate Professor of Oncology, Medicine, Head & Neck/Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, and an Assistant Professor at the Jacob School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, SUNY Buffalo Medical School/ECMC. My clinical experience is further complemented by my roles as a per diem physician at Ellis Hospital and Saratoga Hospital.
From 2019 to 2023, I served as the Medical Director of Saratoga Hematology/Oncology at Malta and Malta Infusion Center in New York, where I demonstrated my leadership and clinical skills. My leadership experience also extends to my tenure as President of Romero Oncology PLLC and as an Attending in Oncology at Saratoga Hospital. I have held significant positions at St Peter’s Hospital, St Luke’s/Roosevelt Hospital, Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and North General Hospital.
My research experience is extensive and diverse, with a particular focus on clinical trials and cancer research. I have served as Principal Investigator and Co-Principal Investigator for numerous studies, including those focusing on breast cancer, endocrine therapy, and minority patient access to clinical trials. My work has been recognized with several grants, including funding from the prestigious Susan G. Komen Foundation and Novartis Pharmaceutical Company.
In addition to my clinical and research work, I have been actively involved in various professional and community organizations. I am a member of the Commission on Cancer at Erie County Medical Center and the Thoracic Clinical Performance Group at the Great Lakes Cancer Care Collaborative. My past service includes roles on the Board of Advisors for the American Red Cross/Greater New York and the American Cancer Society-Upper Manhattan/Harlem branch.
I am board-certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology and board-eligible in Critical Care Medicine. I hold a medical license in New York State and am fluent in Spanish and English. Throughout my career, I have been dedicated to cancer prevention, screening, and treatment. I have contributed to public education through various media outlets, including CNN en Español and the Daily News “Viva New York.”
My commitment to advancing medical knowledge and improving patient care drives my professional endeavors as I strive to make a meaningful impact in oncology and beyond.
